Extreme Weather Policy

We build year-round in all types of weather, and are often able to work through rain, snow and high/low temperatures depending on the stage of construction. Volunteer safety is our top priority, however, so we’ve implemented the following policies to keep everyone safe and happy.

Usually we will have enough work to do indoors to continue working in inclement weather. If the build site will be closed due to weather, you will be notified no later than 7am the day of your build. You can also check our Instagram and Facebook page for site closings/updates.

Cold Weather Policy

Our construction sites will be closed to volunteers if temperatures dip below 15 degrees. If the build site will be closed due to weather, you will be notified no later than 7am the day of your build. You can also check our Instagram and Facebook page for site closings/updates.

→  Wear proper clothing for cold, wet and windy conditions, including layers that can be adjusted to changing conditions.

→  Drink warm, sweet beverages (sugar water, sports-type drinks) and avoid drinks with caffeine (coffee, tea, sodas or hot chocolate).

→  Avoid exhaustion or fatigue because energy is needed to keep muscles warm.

→  Eat warm, high-calorie foods such as hot pasta dishes.

→  Schedule heavy work during the warmer parts of the day.

→  Use the buddy system: Work in pairs so that one employee can recognize danger signs.

→  Take frequent, short breaks in warm dry shelters to allow their bodies to warm up.

→  Be aware of the danger signs: uncontrolled shivering, slurred speech, clumsy movements, fatigue and confused behavior.

→  Risks may increase if you take certain medications, are in poor physical condition or suffer from illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension or cardiovascular disease. Please alert a staff member immediately if you believe you may be at higher risk.

Freezing Temperatures (32 degrees and below):

→  Implement the “Buddy System” to ensure no one is building alone; monitor each other for signs of cold-related illness.

→  Take mandatory hourly breaks in the heated volunteer trailer.

→  Construction Site Manager will close site early if the cold temperatures becomes dangerous or dips below 15 degrees.

Hot Weather Policy

Our construction sites will be closed to volunteers if temperatures dip below 15 degrees. If the build site will be closed due to weather, you will be notified no later than 7am the day of your build. You can also check our Instagram and Facebook page for site closings/updates.

→  Make to drink plenty of water and/or other fluids such as Gatorade during the work day.

→  Staff will provide sunscreen and a cool space for volunteers to rest (construction trailer).

→  Staff will make sure to rotate groups working outside and inside so no one is in the sun for extended periods of time.

→  Report any medical conditions or limitations you may have to a Habitat staff member.

→  Someone who knows CPR will be on site at all times.

→  Staff will notifier volunteers of the location of the first-aid kit and emergency numbers during the morning safety talk.

Hot Weather Builds (85 degrees and up):

→  Implement a “Buddy System” to ensure no one is building alone;  monitor each other for signs of heat-related illness.

→  Take mandatory hourly water breaks; drink small but frequent amounts of water (no more than 4 ounces at a time).

→  Construction Site Manager will close site early if the heat/humidity becomes dangerous.

Inclement Weather Policy

Exterior Work/Raised work

→  Site will be closed to volunteers if we receive more than 6 inches of snow or if the Site Construction Manager deems work unsafe. Staff will notify volunteers of site closing by 5pm the night before inclement weather, when possible.

→  No elevated work will be done when there is precipitation.

Interior/Heated work

→  Construction will continue as planned unless the Site Construction Manager deems it unsafe.

→  Construction Site Manager will send volunteers home early if travel becomes a concern.
