Application process

We are pleased to announce that the homes that we have under construction or in pre-development have all been sold to qualified, first-time homebuyers. Together with our community of donors and volunteers, Habitat has built and sold more than 130 homes here in Albany and Rensselaer Counties.

Habitat now only accepts applications when we have homes available for sale. Applications for the Habitat program require supporting documentation and time to complete, so we don't want to require this investment until we have an available home to sell.

When new homes are available, we will post the details of the application process here.

The application process

During an open application period, you may submit a completed application (which includes attending an information session) to Habitat, which we will then review to see if you meet our program requirements. We strongly encourage prospective applicants to attend an information session before applying to learn if our program is right for you.

Applicants who meet our program requirements will then apply for a mortgage loan with one of our local banking partners. All Habitat homebuyers go through rigorous screening including credit and background checks, employment verification and landlord references. Once approved for a mortgage, you will sign a partnership agreement with Habitat and begin your journey to homeownership.

The homeownership process

After you sign your partnership agreement, we will provide you with a comprehensive homebuyer handbook that describes every step of the process. In general, it takes about 8-12 months from the time you sign your partnership agreement to when you purchase the home and receive your keys. We will help you navigate the journey to homeownership, including the signing of the real estate contract, completing your mortgage loan application, establishing a savings account, completing your sweat equity requirement, completing homebuyer education coursework, applying for down payment assistance, purchasing homeowner's insurance and preparing to purchase your home.
