Celebrating 150: The Habitat model

The Habitat model: 1) Home construction. New construction and rehabilitating buildings. 2) Homeowner Support. Pre- and post-purchase support to ensure homebuyer success and satisfaction. 3) Neighborhood revitalization. Partner with organizations and coalitions in our community on quality-of-life issues. 4) Advocacy. Advocate for federal, state, and local policies that improve access to housing.

This post is an installment in our Celebrating 150 series. Learn more here.

Every day, we aim to help build a more just, more beloved world where everyone has a decent place to call home. Our work is more than just construction – we also support homeowners, revitalize neighborhoods and advocate for important policies to help our neighbors. Every home is a building block to stronger, healthier futures for families and communities.

Together we,

Help families build strength & stability
A decent and affordable home can remove barriers to opportunities for financial stability, health, and more that families may have faced for years, if not generations.

Invest in neighborhoods
Decades of racist practices have caused many of our downtown neighborhoods to face housing discrimination, food apartheid, unsafe streets, and more. We work with our communities to revitalize the neighborhood because we believe every neighborhood should be a great place to call home.

Transfer property back to community control
Instead of absentee landlords or property investors making decisions about a neighborhood, power is transferred back to actual residents every time a Habitat home is sold to a local family.

Strategies.1. Build, preserve and finance affordable homeownership. Serve families and individuals through sustainable construction and housing support services. 2. Mobilize and advocate. Promote policies and market approaches that advance access to affordable housing. 3. Connect and engage people to build homes. Grow awareness of housing as a critical foundation for building strength and stability and mobilize volunteers for our mission.

Habitat supporters have always understood our collective responsibility to care for the well-being of our communities and our neighbors. It is what has sustained our work with local families for more than 30 years, and it’s what will ensure we can keep working toward a more just future.

Everyone has something they can pitch in to help make that vision a reality. Whether it’s volunteering time or skills, donating & fundraising, or just sharing with your network about housing affordability to raise awareness.
