Caring for our neighbors and our shared home: the Earth 🌎

We are called to build a world where everyone has a decent place to call home. This means we care deeply for our shared home: the Earth!

We build green!

We are proud to meet rigorous standards for building energy- and resource-efficient homes. Our NGBSâ„¢ Habitat homes are not only sold with an affordable, responsible SONYMA mortgage, but are energy and cost efficient as well. All of our new construction projects are NGBSâ„¢ certified.

NGBS™ Habitat homes mean families live in healthier, more comfortable and more efficient homes that benefit not only the family, but their neighborhood and our entire world. With lower utility costs and environmental concerns, families will have a comfortable and affordable home for years to come. We think that’s pretty cool.

Since 2016, we’ve built and sold over 50 NGBS™-certified homes in Sheridan Hollow and NGBS™-certified homes in the South End neighborhoods of Albany, with four more nearing completion in Sheridan Hollow.

To earn certification to the National Green Building Standardsâ„¢, a home must meet rigorous criteria in six categories: Lot & Site Development; Resource Efficiency; Energy Efficiency; Water Efficiency; Indoor Environmental Quality; and Homeowner Education.

For over a decade, we have voluntarily and enthusiastically participated in green building programs, including NYSERDA and LEED certification programs. We look forward to building more robust, sustainable communities in the future. Thanks to national partnerships, homeowners also get Energy Star appliances and energy-saving thermostats.

Love the planet with the ReStore

Reduce your carbon footprint through decreasing production resources and transportation emissions required for new items.

  • Exent the life of our local landfills, keep waterways cleaner, and make room for what matters.

  • Repair and up-cycle to in touch with your creative side, helping you to rest up to solve bigger problems (like climate change and affordable housing 😉)

Locally, ReStore sales have supported the construction of more than 140 homes and have helped thousands of households afford quality, second-hand home improvement materials and furnishings. When you choose second-hand first, you prioritize the health of our planet over the wealth of a few corporations.

Choosing secondhand is an easy action you can take for our planet. With local landfills slated to reach capacity within the next five years, and with global waste increasing exponentially, our daily behaviors and habits related to what we throw away, what we reuse, and what we choose to purchase all become vital to the planet’s sustainability as a whole. Every year, your ReStore donations and purchases keep millions of pounds of usable goods out of our local landfills. (Check out our annual reporting here.)
